Corey looked at his watch. He had waited for half an hour at the entrance of the mall, but still no sign of Jessica. He sighed deep and cursed at his tears. He tried to stop them, but when he saw a couple kissing while walking past him, he couldn’t help himself but cry.
“Why?” he mumbled and dried his tears with the sleeve from his jacket. “Why won’t she show up… It’s so completely unfair!” A couple of boys from school walked past him and laughed at him.
“You didn’t really think she’d mean it?!”
“You’re such a loser!”
“Go home and play with your loser videogames!”
“Yeah, get a 3D girlfriend!”
“You could never ever get a real one. Not even if you’d pay her!!” Corey pretended not to hear them and they walked away, still laughing at his expense.
“Just go home! Save yourself the shame from waiting for someone who won’t show up!!” Corey bit on his lip and fought back his tears. It didn’t matter what he felt, how much he wanted her to show up… It wouldn’t change a thing… He shook his head and decided to wait after all. Maybe she was just very late?
He waited.
Fifteen minutes later, there was still no sign of the girl. He suddenly hit his hand against the stone wall of the huge building and cursed out loud. An old couple walking by looked at him and frowned. He didn’t care. She didn’t show up.
“She didn’t show up…” His tears started to flow freely now and he slowly walked back home. How could life be so cruel to him? What was it about him that made girls promise they’d come and then just let him stand there… He was humiliated in front of people he knew, people who already loved making fun of him, and who would tell the whole school what happened – that the coolest girl in school stood him up and broke his heart. And as if it wasn’t enough already, it had also started pouring.
“I thought she was different…” he whispered when he opened the door to his house, his clothes completely soaked. When he remembered his parents took his little brother to some children’s musical that evening, he sighed with relief.

Corey stood up and sighed. He heard the thunderstorm outside raging, and hoped whoever it was had a very good reason for making him come to the door.
“Yes?” He opened the door and saw a figure hiding in a big red coat. Corey couldn’t see who it was, but something gave him goosebumps. “What do you want?” The figure looked up.
“Sorry I’m so freaking late. The car broke down.”
